The Affordable Care Act (ACA) makes sure that every qualified American has the chance to purchase reasonably priced health insurance for themselves and their family once a year. Known as the “Open Enrollment Period,” it runs from November 1 through January 15 in most states this year. And the general open enrollment for Medicare is between January 1-March 31 each year.

One caveat: if your company offers you health insurance that complies with the ACA and you decide to decline it in favor of buying your own ACA plan, you typically won’t be eligible for any subsidies and will have to pay the full cost of your monthly premiums. Therefore, unless your employer insurance costs more than 9.61% of your household income, if you have access to health insurance coverage through your job, we advise you to purchase it rather than the Marketplace.
In most states, the open enrollment period for 2022 runs from November 1 to January 15, 2022. Enrollments made between December 16 and January 15 will start on February 1, 2022, while those made between December 16 and December 15 will start on January 1, 2022.
Anyone who qualifies may sign up for a Marketplace health plan during the Open Enrollment Period. Otherwise, you’ll need a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). Qualifying events include losing your health coverage, giving birth to a child, getting married, or another change in household size or health coverage.
